August 8 2002	Earth Day Fair on Vashon Island: Vashon-Majiwa Sister Village Project Inspired by Vashon High School students, who helped raise $1,500 last spring, a dedicated group of islanders have set up a Vashon-Majiwa Sister Village committee. The inhabitants of this beautiful island in the Puget Sound, near Seattle, have pledged to help the children of Majiwa. At the island's annual Earth Fair Festival on August 3, 2002, Atieno Kombe, from Urgent Africa was surrounded by a group of island children and their parents, as she told African stories and shared about life in the village during better times. Island children made colorful handprints on banners, which was delivered to the the end of August. Artist Michael Masi painted Vashon and Kenya side by side on the two banners, along with the saying, "Vashon Island extends a hand to Majiwa Village." The children of Majiwa will be placing their own hand prints over Vashon's as a symbol of friendship. One of the banners will return to Vashon, while the other will stay in the Village. Vashon High School's Interact Club has adopted a family and has been fund raising and has committed to sending $60 a month to a family of orphans for three years.

Modibo Traore a percussionist and dancer from Casamance region of Senegal, West Africa, specializes in Jola Bougarabou as well as Mandinka Kutiro traditional drum and dance. Maya Soleil Traditions presents acoustic African song and dance with traditional musical instruments, colorful costumes, and featured performers from the countries of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Ghana. Also, a video created by UW graduate student Matthew Sullivan--It's a wonderful film! African snacks, African Market Place. Earned $3,200

July 11 2004	"A Taste of Africa" Benefit Graciously held at the home of Phil Welt in Madison Park in Seattle with our Honored Guest, Sixth District Congressman, Jim McDermott. From left: Kathleen Dolan, Atieno Kombe, Muthike Kithome, Congressman Jim McDermott and, James Muya. Muthike (Deborah is her chosen American name) is one of the students from Kenya that Urgent Africa helped get through her schooling. She arrived at SeaTac airport in mid-June to start her college education…the first time she has been away from her homeland. Muthike (it means “tenacious warrior”) is committed to finishing her education in medicine and returning to her village to start a badly needed health clinic. She is just one of nearly 50 students Urgent Africa currently supports. In his remarks, Congressman McDermott praised the efforts of Urgent Africa and similar grass roots organizations in helping to make a difference in the lives of the children and widows who are victims of the ravages of the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
