Nyanza Province, Kenya
Currently, Urgent Africa is working in Nyanza Province, in the western region of Kenya along Lake Victoria. Nyanza is mostly inhabited by the Luo people. The Luo, considered the intellectuals of Kenya, are an articulate, community conscious people, and were prominent in Kenya's struggle for independence.
Most of our work has centered around Majiwa and Rabuor village. These villages are among the many small villages that have been hit hard by the deaths of parents leaving thousands of orphans to fend for themselves and grandparents, families and community members unable to pay for school and care for the children. Left without a working population, adults to guide their generation, or money to pay for tuition, these children need your help. Our projects include: orphan and widow support, demonstration/teaching garden and agricultural curriculum for the high schools, integrative health care, availability of potable water, infrastructure development, cultural preservation projects, and economic development.
