- Urgent Africa is a non-profit organization that offers assistance to people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. The organization's mission is to provide health services, education and support to widows and orphans, as well as work in cooperation with local people to build healthy, self-sufficient, sustainable communities.
- Currently, Urgent Africa is working in Majiwa village and surrounding areas, which is located in Nyanza Province in Kenya. Nyanza is mostly inhabited by the Luo people. The Luo are an articulate, community-conscious people, who were prominent in Kenya's struggle for independence.
Urgent Africa's programs in Nyanza Province:
- Nia Health and Resource Center - A centrally-located clinic and information center that provides medical and dental care, HIV/AIDS information; counseling and support for infected people; education about good nutrition that will help support a healthy immune system; and HIV/AIDS testing. All services are free at Nia.
- Ujima Orphan and Widow Project - This program provides orphans with school tuition, books, school uniforms and money for foster families who take on the biggest challenge of the AIDS crisis. Ujima provides assistance so that the children can be protected from the further spread of disease and the effects of poverty.
- Kuumba Partners in Sustainability - Urgent Africa is working with local people to assess the community's resources and needs for power, clean water, waste disposal and sustainable agricultural and economic development. Working with professionals and college students trained in appropriate technology applications, economic development and community building, Kuumba develops and implement projects that work towards sustainable solutions.
